I say m'am and sir whenever I respond to someone who is not a close friend, I say pecan in the way that drives my grandpa crazy and brings to his mind a can full of peas. I am a southerner, if not born then definately bred. I never thought of myself as having an accent, and, to be honest, neither would any of my GA people. And, anybody that listens to my best friend Melissa talk knows that I have only a hint of what she has in the accent department, although I've been accused of picking it up from her when we hang out much.
In New York, I always get the impression that people are angry with me-their manner of speaking is very brusque. And I get the feeling that they find me a little too talkative. "Let's get to the point and get on with it" seems to be the prevailing attitude, and the looks I get when I start talking range from amusement to annoyance.
Well, I say yes m'am and no sir, as do my children, we say y'all without provocation, and we will drawl when at all possible (lol)....you won't hear us say ain't, though...that's where I draw the line!

i wouldnt even worry about that the northerners are always like that even if u dont have an accent. they are annoyed with themselves some people think its cute as others think its bad english but nobody speaks perfect english nowadays. u are respectful and i still say ya'll all the time and other "southern accent" things ~zinammi
Personally, I find mam and sir a delightful way of addressing people and so enjoy it when I hear it!! Keep it up!
